Enclosures: Hazardous vs. Non-Hazardous

In many industries the need for monitoring gas flow does not involve hazardous gases or potentially dangerous operating conditions. These applications can include many water and wastewater treatment applications, the HVAC industry, the general use of compressed air, and many other applications using air, nitrogen, argon, etc. In these cases, an explosion-proof electronics enclosure is not required, and may be considered a needless expense. To meet this challenge, Eldridge Products, Inc. now offers the Master-Touch™ Family of microprocessor-based thermal gas mass flowmeters… in a nonhazardous enclosure.

In many other industries the need for monitoring gas flow involves hazardous gases, potentially dangerous operating environments or simply a desire for a rugged, industrial-strength configuration. These applications include many common manufacturing processes, natural gas metering, compressed air auditing, etc. The Master-Touch MP Series is now approved for use in hazardous area locations: Class I Division 1 Groups B, C and D; Class II E, F and G; Class III; Type 4X, 7; Ex d IIB + H2; AEx d IIB + H2, IP66; EEx d IIB + H2, IP66; T2 (consult factory for T3 or T4).

Lectrodryer Uses EPI Internationally

For over 75 years Lectrodryer has been designing, engineering, and manufacturing adsorption drying equipment for the power plants, landfill gas, compressed air, gas refining, solvent recovery, chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and furnace applications. Pictured are H2 Gen Aux Skids that were built for Power Plants in South Africa. In this picture you will notice the Eldridge Flow Transmitters in the left side of the skid.

EPI to join the 2010 Pacific West Biomass Conference

EPI will be a key participant in the upcoming 2010 Pacific West Biomass Conference & Expo in Sacramento, CA. EPI recognizes that onsite biomass power generation is becoming increasingly mainstream. Biomass is not only an excellent source of next generation biofuels and grid-scale electricity, but also industrial/commercial thermal energy and combined heat and power (CHP). The electricity produced by CHP has only a short distance to travel between generator and end use, therefore, utilizing this heat and steam can improve industrial energy efficiencies by more than 35 percent.

More broadly, biomass thermal energy is the use of biomass for commercial and or residential space and/or water heating, process heat, and the thermal portion of combined heat and power. According to the Biomass Thermal Energy Council, the utilization of biomass for thermal heating applications is one of the most efficient means to produce usable energy—thus displacing fossil fuels and reducing GHG emissions. It is EPI's mission to support industries that use biomass technology to continue to foster a greener, sustainable future.

Flowmeter Electronics: Integral vs. Remote

Wondering what kind of flowmeter electronics are right for you? Sometimes flowmeters can only be installed in hazardous locations or places that are inconveniently out of reach. Luckily, EPI offers two options that are suitable to whatever work environment you find yourself in.

Integral style thermal mass flow meters are assembled with all electrical components and connections located within one enclosure. Depending on the specific application, the enclosure may be either explosion-proof cast aluminum or NEMA 4X for non-hazardous environments. In either case, the enclosure is mounted directly to the inline or insertion assembly.

Remote style thermal mass flowmeters utilize two enclosures. One enclosure is mounted to the inline or insertion assembly as noted above with the same explosion-proof or non-hazardous area options. The second enclosure is typically NEMA 4X, and it includes the all of the electrical connections as well as the linearizing electronics. Only a two-wire, twisted-pair cable is required to carry the input power and flow signal between the two enclosures.

EPI Visits the Asia-Pacific Region

Mr. Riaz Danish, EPI’s experienced International Training Consultant, is planning an extensive trip to the Asia-Pacific region. Riaz had been introduced to EPI in 1992 and has had a business affiliation with us for many years. As the head of International Marketing Engineers (IME) in San Francisco, Mr. Danish functions as a commissioned consultant for EPI, for whom he locates, recommends, and trains International Distributors mainly in the Asia-Pacific and European regions. EPI works closely with IME on territory recommendations. Training sessions include product material distribution and step-by-step instruction for EPI meters and software. Water & Wastewater Treatment with EPI

Spotlight on Sensors

How do EPI's unique sensors work?

EPI’s proprietary thermal mass flow sensors use two ratiometrically-matched, reference-grade platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs). A forced null Wheatstone Bridge preferentially heats one RTD. The second RTD acts as a temperature reference by taking on the temperature of the flowing gas. The resistance ratios are maintained through the Wheatstone Bridge to compensate for the dynamic changes in process temperature. By maintaining a constant temperature difference between the RTDs, EPI can measure the amount of heat dissipated by the flowing gas. As heat is dissipated, more power is needed to maintain the constant temperature. The power demand is directly proportional to the gas mass flow rate, allowing our sensors to measure the gas molecular rate of flow without further compensation for outside effects.

Eldridge Products, Inc.'s new ValuMass division produces the ValuMassTMModel 500 & 540flowmeters. These instruments offer a low cost optionfor Air, Nitrogen and other inert gas flow applications with the high value associated with all of EPI's instrumentation.

ValuMassTM Model 500 inline and Model 540 insertion flowmeters accommodate virtually all installation requirements. The insertion style flowmeters are available with 1/2" OD probes in 6", 12" or 18" lengths. A compression fitting for convenient mounting is included with all insertion style flowmeters. The inline style flow meters are available for line sizes from 1/4" to 2". The 3-1/2" long flow sections have MNPT ends as standard for easy mounting in the process line.
